The case in brief

Javion Magee, 21, drove a truck out of Aurora, Illinois. On September 10, 2024, he delivered a load to the Walmart distribution center in Henderson, North Carolina. The next morning he was found dead off Vanco Mill Road, seated at the base of a tree with a rope around his neck, his truck nearby. Because a Black man had been found hanging in the South, the case drew national attention within days — and the Vance County Sheriff answered it with records: his office released surveillance video showing Magee purchasing the rope at a Walmart self-checkout, stated there were no signs of foul play, and said plainly that the death was not a lynching. Magee's family, represented by civil-rights attorneys, held a courthouse press conference demanding transparency and asking whether a hate crime had been investigated. In May 2025 the state medical examiner's classification was reported: suicide, with a toxicology screen that found no alcohol or drugs contributing. This file holds that record — unusually complete for this series, because North Carolina autopsy reports are public.

It remains the centerpiece of the official account — and the family's attorneys continued to press for the full investigative file around it.
